Muskegon Lake Effect Celebration and Boat Time Press Release

The Muskegon Lake Effect Celebration and Boat Time invites all to the Muskegon area for some boating fun! “We don't need special concerts, or carnivals, to enjoy.  We are effected by natural fun of the Lake. Let's celebrate summer in true Muskegon style, on the Lake, "Dockin at the Dunes" on Saturday, August 20 and "Packin the Pier" on Sunday, August 21, commented Roger Zuidema Boat Time promoter.

Muskegon will open it’s boating "Arms" to all, as boaters experience Muskegon Lake and the channel connections to Lake Michigan and Bear Lake. “I can’t think of another port where you can cruise by a vintage submarine, USS Silversides, ride past the Milwaukee Clipper, the Queen of the Great Lakes, and see the LST 393 a historic WW II cargo vessel”, said Zuidema.  “The Lake Express, Muskegon to Milwaukee Car Ferry, is a sight to see as it navigates to the dock. You just can’t help but wave to the visitors aboard.”

Many maritime businesses are planning special events (see list below) and charters including the Muskegon Charter Fishing Association offering the"Lake Effect Fishing Deal."  With purchase of a 5 hour fishing charter for up to 6 people, you will receive 6 hours of fishing.

The Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum will offer an underwater robotics Remotely Operated Vehicle (R.O.V.) program where people can experience how to build and operate an underwater robot.

GVSU will host two days of Making Lake Michigan Great - Educational Cruise and Research Expedition (Tuesday, August 16 and Friday August 19) around Muskegon Lake on the W. G. Jackson out to Lake Michigan to test water quality to learn about the condition of the lake.  Participants take water samples, testing quality in a number of ways - sediment, alkalinity, pH, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and plankton.

“Water quality isn’t just one thing,” said Dr. Janet Vail, research scientist.  “It’s a wide range of variables that make up the whole.  We invite the public to take advantage of this expedition adventure.  Enjoy a time out on the Lake doing hands-science and seeing the restoration projects happening in Muskegon Lake.”

The boating expedition is available for ages 10 and up, and an adult must accompany minors. These free cruises are being funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative through EPA's Great Lakes National Program Office. To sign up visit www.lakeeffectboating.com

Boaters are called to join the fun by showing off their boats and experiencing the effect of the lake with two special boat meet ups.
